Jos Coufreur was born in 1959 in Holland, and studied art at the Royal Academy of Art in Den Bosch. He and his wife immigrated to New Zealand in 1987 and now have four children.
Jos started painting as a youngster, but decided to specialise in animals about 10 years ago. Now he paints mainly horses and enjoys painting the full action racing scenes. A lot of his work is done on commission. He paints in all the media watercolour, oil, acrylic, pastel, charcoal etc. He works from photographs. Another specialty are his dog, cat and other pet portraits he does on commission. More recently he has been painting flowers and children on beaches.As a largely self taught artist he has developed his own impressionistic textured technique. However, for animal portraits he uses a traditional realist style.
His work has been sold widely throughout New Zealand. He has also been the recipient of the
KG Fraser Award 2004
and 1st professional oil section Royal Easter Show, Auckland.
